Translation Embassy was founded by Maria Xanthopoulou. Maria is a certified professional translator and interpreter with international experience in several multicultural environments. Her working languages are English, German, French, Turkish and Greek. She has been working as a translator and interpreter since 2009.
Maria graduated from the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting, which belongs to the Ionian University of Corfu. In this 4-year BA programme she was trained in translation and foreign languages. The programme included a 6-months internship at the Institute of Translation, Interpreting and International Relations, which is based at the University of Stransbourg. Besides that, she also attended courses at the Leibniz University of Hanover for one year as an Erasmus student.
She holds a Master’s Degree in Conference Interpreting from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In addition to that she attended an intensive interpreting course at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Germersheim and interpreting courses at the Bosphorus University of Istanbul, where she expanded her knowledge of the Turkish language and culture.
Her passion for languages motivated her to study abroad in other occasions as well. The following examples constitute important training programmes and seminars she took part in:
- Turkish and Foreign languages Research and Application Centre TÖMER – University of Ankara: at this centre Maria attained Turkish language courses and obtained a higher Diploma in Turkish granted by TÖMER
- Palacky University in Olomouc (Czech Republic): Maria won a scholarship granted by the Czech government and she studied the Czech language in the Summer School of Slavonic languages.
After graduating Maria started working as a freelancer, but soon moved to in-house positions in companies across Europe, where she worked with multinational teams. This experience allowed her to enhance her intercultural communication skills and expand her knowledge about different cultures. Besides the translator role, she also worked as a Project Manager in Urban Translation Services (Istanbul) during 2012-2013. In 2013 she started working for SurveyMonkey first based in Lisbon and later in Dublin. In SurveyMonkey she took part in localization projects aiming at improving the Turkish version of corporate websites and the tool’s user interface. During her employement she also supported Turkish, English and German speaking customers. In 2015 she started her own business branded Translation Embassy. Her office undertakes translation, interpreting and other linguistic assignments.
Maria is a member of PEEMPIP (Panhellinic Association of Professional Translators Graduates of the Ionian University). PEEMPIP is a member of FIT (International Federation of Translators) and EULITA (European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association).
In 2016 she also joined the Greek-Turkish Chamber of Northern Greece.
